Despite all of the untimely celebrity deaths, this disastrous election cycle, and feeling like I'm working too much and creating too little 2016 has been a great year for me. I've made some beautiful memories with my closest friends that I will cherish for the rest of my life. From preaching to VanFest as the disheveled CEASE-AW-RATS Cult to having another successful Friendsgiving party hosted by my ever-generous mother 2016 has been filled to the brim with fun moments and I look forward to what the new year brings. As well as all of the fun moments brought about from the resurrection of SEACATS from our cryo-sleep I want to talk about all of the fun that I've had my comrades Jason Johnson, Arianna Ross, and Sebastian Hunter in Itemfinder, my other band where I write most of the music.
Early in the year Itemfinder joined forces once again with Mike Vernon, who recorded our single Lumpy // Pity Party in October of 2015, for two days to marathon record five songs for our still unreleased EP My Worst Traits which will be released early next year (I promise). The experience was a bit grueling and we didn't get as much finished as we would have hoped to in that 100-meter sprint of a studio session but in just those two days the songs changed drastically for the better and I can't wait to put the finished versions of those songs out for everyone to hear. I'm very proud of what we created.
In May we played what I believe everyone in the band would call our favorite show ever. We were fast enough to ask and lucky enough to get chosen to open for Jeff Rosenstock at the Funhouse. Jeff was on tour in support of his album We Cool? that every member of Itemfinder, except me, had been listening to non stop since it came out. I remember the nerves prepping for the show and the electric energy of being in front of the biggest and most active crowd that we had ever played in front of up to that point, and probably since. That show really felt like a big payoff for all of the work we had put in as a band up until then. I really hope to play with Jeff Rosenstock again soon because not only is his music great but he's a real sweetheart.
In late July Itemfinder left home to go on our first ever tour. I had started the planning stages late into 2015 so that I would have a large window of time to plan us out the massive summer tour that we had all been hoping for. Unfortunately due to my lack of connections and our lack of any music online, save for our single on bandcamp, I had a very difficult time finding us any good shows and the ones I did find fell through one after another. I had nearly lost all hope when Josh offered to basically do all of the work to set us up some PNW shows with our fellow SEACATS UNIVERSE bands Special Explosion and Talktin and Easy. He ended up pulling together Bellingham, Seattle, and Portland shows, which, along with a Chico, CA house show (set up by our beautiful friend with a real big heart Alex Anderson) made it a tour worthy of being called a tour. Although it was short, the drive to Chico was long, and the shows were under-attended I had an absolute blast and traveling with my band was a very fun and rewarding experience. Almost better than the shows was a detour to the Oregon Vortex, a strange and far off the highway tourist trap with wonky gravity and a very enthusiastic tour guide. I got a bumper sticker, JJ got a Tie-Dye shirt, and Sebastian even stole a kendama from the gift shop. Good stuff!
Thanks so much to everyone who has been a part of the Itemfinder experience in 2016, this year has been filled with so much fun and so many fulfilling moments and I will be forever grateful to all of the people who have made it all possible. Shout outs to Special Explosion, Talktin and Easy, Silver Medal, Curse League, Quieter, Glacier Veins, Floral Tattoo, The City Hall, Dog Mountain, The Moon Bears, Counter/Balance, Newbrighton, Lofty Stills, Jeff Rosenstock, Boy on Guitar, that Misfits cover band from the Hostilgato house, Difficult Children, Sunken Grade, Blotterz, Dowsing, The Exquisites, Winter Break, dentaru no tsuba, Cool Void, Tangler, Bad Future, Retirement, Carlos Santana, and everyone else we played with in 2016 and ever before and forever.
